The Inauguration. Wow.
As it slowly sinks in that Obama got elected as the new president of the United States, and that he will soon be sworn into the White House, I can practically feel the collective sigh of relief sweeping over the nation below us. As their northern neighbor, we seem to have caught an updraft of that current, and in turn we let the wind of optimism take us away as well.
Televised reports everywhere were playing Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech over and over again. Because one strong African-American leader is reminiscent of another. He had a dream, perhaps it came true. I can't say I have witnessed the entire speech, so perhaps there are underlying meanings I have missed. For those of you who are more knowledgeable, I encourage you to enlighten me.
People were showing their enthusiasm left and right. Spokespersons on most national news were interviewing scientists on the process that helps calculate how long it would take for the new president of the US to give up basketball and have some salt and pepper settle onto his scalp. I saw one hostess from The View attempting to break into the White House while another was gearing herself up with Obama merchandise at a presidential gift shop.
What kind of message is being sent exactly? I might not be a person that is overly politically savvy (read: not at all), but I usually get the usual gist of what goes down. Yet, as it seems, while this part of the world is being lifted again amidst this abysmal recessive period, I can help but feel confused.
Maybe, just like for all major events, the build up seemed to last forever, yet as the climax takes place, it is all too momentary. It's like a backwards roller coaster where the ride was shorter than the climb.
Do I feel positively about this? No, not really. I still believe that all the bad things are still there and are still happening (Tangent: I once learned in my Abnormal Psychology class that depressed people tend to be more realistic.). Perhaps Obama is there to cushion it all, I do not deny that I am looking forward to positive changes in certain social infrastructures and I am aware of the large amount of time it will take for it all to change. Do I feel negatively about this? I don't either, but I can't exactly justify the feeling.
One thing is clear, everyone is obsessed with him. He seems to be our hero, and simply by getting elected, it felt like we were being saved.
Maybe it's a start.
